Choosing the Best Radiant Barrier for Attic & Roof Insulation

Which product should I use?

As with any construction project, selecting the proper material is critical to the performance of your radiant barrier installation.  We offer several grades of material as well as perforated and non-perforated products to suit your particular needs.  This page is intended to aid you in selecting the correct house insulation material.

Attic Installations:

You should only use perforated material in an attic.

Use ARMA FOIL™ if you intend to staple the RB above the attic space.

Use ARMA FOIL™ for applications that do not require hanging by staples.

Housewraps:

In most US climate zones, you should use ARMA FOIL™ when installing radiant barrier as a housewrap.

In a few select climate zones it may be best to use ARMA FOIL-VB™ when installing radiant barrier as a housewrap.

Check with your local building codes.  If they call for a true vapor barrier on the exterior of the wall, you can use ARMA FOIL-VB™, otherwise you need to use ARMA FOIL™ which will allow your wall to "breathe".

Floor Installations:

In general, you should use ARMA FOIL™ when installing radiant floor insulation or in a crawl space.

Check with your local building codes.  If they call for a true vapor barrier on the exterior side of the insulation, you can use ARMA FOIL-VB™, otherwise you need to use ARMA FOIL™ which will allow your floor to "breathe" to the outside.

Interior Vapor Barrier:

In most heating dominated climates (northern states) it is proper to install a vapor barrier on the interior side of the insulation.  In this case you should use ARMA FOIL-VB™ when installing radiant barrier in a wall or ceiling on the interior side of the insulation.

Check with your local building codes to see if a vapor barrier is recommended.
